Youth Justice System in the UK
The operation and effectiveness of the youth justice system has been a concern of the foundation for over a decade. An Inquiry by Parliamentarians into the operation and effectiveness of the youth justice system, chaired by Lord Carlile was launched on 23 September 2014.

Deaths of Young People in Custody
On 6th February 2014 the Justice Secretary announced an independent review into self-inflicted deaths in National Offender Management Service custody of 18-24 year olds.
The purpose of the review was to make recommendations to reduce the risk of future self-inflicted deaths in custody. The consultation ran from 1 May 2014 to 18 July 2014 details for which can be found online here..

The Department for Education’s (DfE) Consultation Paper: “Powers to delegate children’s social care functions”
In three brief pages issued in a Consultation Paper on 17 April 2014 the Government set out the ground for a radical change of local government responsibilities for their work with children and young people. For such a major policy development the consultation period of six weeks, ending on 30 May 2014, was unacceptably short.

We are in constant discussions with The Ministry of Justice about extending the powers of the Youth Court to give it the same powers as are available to the family court to direct a Local Authority to report to the court.

In 2012 The Michael Sieff Foundation called for the extension of section 37 of the Children Act 1989 to the Youth Court. We were involved in discussions with The Ministry of Justice about extending the powers of the Youth Court to give it the same powers as are available to the family court to direct a Local Authority to report to the court.
